THE WONDERS - "THAT THING YOU DO"

Q:   Did the actors in the movie "That Thing You Do" do their own singing and playing?  Thanks - Anonymous

A:  Thank you for taking the time to send me your question.

While writer/director Tom Hanks did insist that each of the actors learn to play their instruments and learn the songs, they did not perform the versions you hear in the film and on the soundtrack.  Hanks just wanted to ensure that they looked authentic.  The theme song "That Thing You Do", was written by Adam Schlesinger of the group Fountains of Wayne.  The lead vocals were done by Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers.

I found many conflicting accounts of this around the world wide web.  Just to be certain, I went to the source.  I emailed the webmaster and the manager of Fountains of Wayne. Ken Weinstein's' reply was: "FOW’s Adam Schlesinger wrote the song...Candy Butcher’s Mike Viola sings it"

I hope this has been helpful.

Thanks - Raven
