ZEBRA

Q:
There was a group back in the early-mid 80's called Zebra. What ever happened to them, and was their big hit 'who's behind the door'? Thanks- Tyler

A: Hi Tyler-

Thanks for your question: "There was a group back in the early-mid 80's called Zebra. What ever happened to them, and was their big hit 'who's behind the door'?"

Zebra was a band that came out of New Orleans in the mid-70's. It consisted of Randy Jackson (vo, gu), Felix Hanemann (ba, ke), Guy Gelso (dr). They got their name from a Vogue magazine cover. They got their big break in 1983 while the world was looking for the "next Led Zeppelin". Their self-titled debut went gold, thanks to the air-play of excellent singles "Tell Me What You Want" and "Who's Behind the Door". (And yes, it was their biggest hit and is still the song they are best known for).

Despite the efforts of veteran producer Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, Cheap Trick), their follow-up album, "No Tellin' Lies" (1984) plummeted from the chart radar. By '84, the air waves were inundated with what would become known as "hair bands" and more main stream hard rock/metal bands. "No Tellin' Lies" was not as strong an effort as "Zebra" and failed to break out as their debut album had. In 1986 the band released "3.v". Fans of the band seem to have a love it or hate it attitude about this album. Some think it's their best work, others feel they sold out and acquired a "pop" edge to their music. Regardless, it wasn't enough of a success to keep the troubled band afloat.

There is a happy ending to this story. In 2003, the band got back in the studio and released a new album, "Zebra IV". They are also touring and working on a "Live Unplugged" DVD. Their albums can be found on CD, including a live King Biscuit Flour Hour album.

They have an official site called "The Door", though very little info is given on the site.
